🎧 Week 1: Exercise - Repeat to Remember
Listen without interrupting, then summarize what the other person said, before you respond.
Ex: “So what I’m hearing is you’re frustrated because the deadline keeps changing, is that right?”
⏱ Week 2: Exercise - Silence Stretch
Practice a 5-second pause before replying in any conversation.
Ex: Count “1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi…” silently after the other person finishes speaking. Then respond.
👂 Week 3: Exercise - Listen for Emotion
Identify the emotion behind someone's words.
Ex: Ask yourself silently, What are they feeling? What matters most to them?
📘 Week 1: Exercise – Story Swap
Ask the other person to share a recent experience or story (personal or professional).
After listening, retell the story in your own words, emphasizing their feelings and perspective.
Ex: “You seem really proud of that, is that correct?”
🌀 Week 2: Exercise - Empathy Echo
In one daily conversation, pay attention to how the other person talks.
*Fast, slow, calm, excited, organized, or emotional.
Then adjust one part of your own response to match their style.
*Your tone, your speed, or how you explain things.
Examples:
If they’re excited → bring more energy. If they’re quiet → speak softer and slower.
If they like structure → give clear steps. If they talk in stories → respond with a story or feeling.
🔍 Week 3: Exercise - Curiosity Burst
Once per day, ask a single follow-up question that goes one layer deeper:
“How did that make you feel?”
“What made that challenging?”
“What were you hoping would happen?”
⚓ Week 1: Exercise – Anchor the Moment
When a new challenge appears (personal or professional):
Example: A new challenge appears: “There’s an unexpected tax bill.”
⭐ From that fact, identify a solution:
“I can file for an extension and set aside $ each month to pay it.” *Solution then broken into steps.
Result: You’ve adapted to the challenge with a plan. It was unexpected, but it didn’t derail you.
Focus: Grounding yourself before grounding others.
⌚ Exercise 1: Early by 5
Arrive 5 minutes early to every meeting or commitment.
Ex: If a meeting starts at 2 PM, be there and ready at 1:55 PM.
📌 Exercise 2: Same-Day Follow-Through
Complete one commitment the same day you make it.
Ex: If you say you’ll do something, do it that day.
🗣 Exercise 2: Language Audit
Eliminate vague commitment language for one week.
Ex: Replace “I’ll try,” or “should be” with a clear commitment like “Yes, by 3pm,” or a direct “No, I can’t”
⚖ Exercise 1: The Integrity Pause
Before making a decision, pause and ask one question:
“Would I be comfortable if this decision were publicly known?”
Examples:
The goal is to build the habit of checking decisions against your values before acting.
🔥 Exercise 1: Do It Anyway
Choose one task each day that you don’t feel like doing, and complete it anyway.
Example: “I don’t feel motivated to make these calls, but I’m going to complete 5 before stopping.”
🧱 Exercise 2: Reframe the Setback
Once per day, take one challenge or frustration and reframe it into an opportunity or lesson.
Ask yourself: What is this teaching me? How can this make me better?
Example: “This delay is frustrating, but it’s giving me time to review my presentation.”
